ESSENTIAL INFO

Arrival to Cusco

The Cusco airport is currently reserved only for domestic flights, so all international travelers by air must disembark in Lima (The capital of Peru) and go through customs. Even if your flight to Cusco is the same day on the same airline, you must take your luggage to Lima and then check it again to Cusco.

The best way to get to Cusco is by air, and there are several options on the airlines. LAN tends to be the most expensive but has more options and flights. Expect flight delays or cancellations. Due to the high altitude of Cusco (3400masl), it tends to be difficult to land and any weather conditions will stop air traffic. Bus travel is always available, and although the trip can be long, especially from Lima; The buses in Peru are very well maintained and comfortable. This option is highly recommended if you come from a city closer to Cusco, such as Puno. Lima buses will take around 20 hours to arrive.

About your suitcase:

Any additional luggage you have with you can be safely left in Cusco at your hotel – while in the tour. Make sure your bags have labels so they are easy to located.

About the altitude:

As soon as people book their trip to Peru, especially Cusco, they begin to wonder about altitude sickness. High altitude air contains less oxygen than at sea level and forces your body to work harder to get the oxygen. For several days at high altitude, your body adapts to the least amount of oxygen in the air. For this reason, we always recommend walk slowly and drink enough water. Cusco is a wonderful city with a lot to do, so if you have more time to acclimatize, you won’t get bored.

With altitude sickness, you may first feel that you have the flu or hangover. You may have a headache, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea or vomiting, dizziness, trouble sleeping, trouble breathing while exercising. If any of these effects get worse, contact our office and we will help you see a doctor.

Most of the time, these symptoms will be mild. We always recommend doing the activity slowly, allowing your body to adapt. Drink lots of fluids, such as water or coca tea. Coca tea has been used since ancient times to help prevent altitude sickness. Coca leaves contain alkaloids that help transport oxygen through the bloodstream, which helps your body avoid the effects of altitude sickness. Avoid drinking a lot of alcohol and coffee, as they will make you urinate more frequently and become dehydrated. Avoid smoking, Smoking makes it hard for your body to get oxygen. Avoid sleeping pills. They can cause shallow breathing at night, which makes it difficult for your body to absorb oxygen during sleep.

About weather:

Of course, the weather is unpredictable. Usually, the dry season in Cusco is from April to October, but that does not prevent the rain from falling in June or the December sun, so be prepared. Regardless of the month of hiking, make sure you have rain gear that includes a waterproof jacket, pants, poncho and waterproof gloves. Many people forget gloves, but the cold and humidity make you unpleasant. Also get ready for four seasons.

To appreciate better the Inti Raymi festival, the following tips are important:

► EARLY ARRIVALS: residents arrive in a few hours at the Church of Santo Domingo, the Plaza de Armas and Sacsayhuaman to ensure an optimal place to see the procession.

► Travelers can also buy tickets to sit at the observation posts of Sacsayhuaman (via the government agency EMUFEC or a travel agency).

► Climate and what to wear: Although the weather in Cusco is unpredictable, the days of late June are generally sunny and it is important to be equipped with sunscreen (sunscreen, hat, light shirt with long sleeves) and to stay hydrated to avoid the worst effects of a hot day at altitude.

► Book everything you can in advance: June is Cusco’s peak season and you can expect accommodation, train tickets to Machu Picchu and walks to fill up early and quickly. Some hotels in Cusco charge higher rates for Inti Raymi; Talk to your travel advisor for the latest information.
